Industrialization of coal to olefin technology in China

"Adhering to the frontiers of science and technology in the world, facing the main battlefield of the economy, facing the major needs of the state, and facing the health and life of the people" - On September 11, 2020, General Secretary Xi Jinping put forward the "four orientations" requirements at the forum of scientists, pointing out the direction for promoting the innovation driven development and speeding up the pace of technological innovation in the "14th Five-Year" period and the longer term, inspiring the majority of scientists and scientific and technological workers to shoulder their historical responsibilities and constantly marching into the breadth and depth of science and technology.  

Three decades of sharpening a sword: since the 1980s, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics began to deploy the research work of methanol to olefins, and carried out innovative R&D around the reaction principle, catalyst and reaction process.  In 2004, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Xinxing Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and Sinopec Luoyang Engineering Co., Ltd. cooperated to develop a complete set of industrial technology for methanol to light olefins (process name: DMTO), built the world's first 10,000 ton (50 tons of methanol per day) industrial test device for methanol to olefins, and successfully completed the industrial test in 2006. The plant scale and technical indicators are at the international leading level; in 2008, DMTO special catalyst realized industrial production; in 2010, the project team used DMTO technology to build and complete the world's first methanol to olefin industrial unit, which was successfully started and operated stably in August of that year.  Since January 2011, it has officially entered the commercial operation stage, marking that China has taken the lead in realizing the "zero" breakthrough in the core technology and industrial application of methanol to olefins.  

As a classic example of successful cooperation among industry, University and research, DMTO project fundamentally benefits from its long-term adherence to the goal of meeting major national strategic needs, clear positioning, fully emancipating the mind, strengthening strategic cooperation and taking an innovative R&D cooperation mode.
